Anxiety and cars

Scruffy as hell.
Based on my sisters personal description.

Giving a visual voice to silenced pain

My sister and I were in having one of our nice long evening talks last night.
We started reflecting on our experiences in high school and how they affected us.

This brought us to the conversation about anxiety, body dysmorphia and insecurities.
Something that a lot of us have either experienced or heard of but never really truly acknowledged by society as a 'real problem'.
Someone breaks their arm, it is attended to, wrapped up and it is indisputable that they cant use that arm for a while.
However, if someone has anxiety for example, they are often told to 'snap out of it' or questioned about whether or not they are trying hard enough.

Why is it not treated like a a broken arm?
Why aren't they being attended to, treated and being taken seriously?

I was one of those people who didn't take the problem seriously, even when it was my sister crying out in pain.
What I think became a barrier for believing that my sisters struggle was real was that I didn't understand.

I just couldn't comprehend it.
It was happening in her head and all I could see was a small piece of a bigger internal battle through her words.

With a broken arm, you see it then and there.
You know what physical pain feels like so it's a lot easier to relate to.

Maybe be there is something I can do to help people empathise and understand mental disabilities/illnesses. PIXAR's Inside Out personified representations of emotions in the human body was a perfect start in feature animation films in getting people to talk.

Character designing

For the pure fun of it.
Say hello to the Famous Five.
(Yes, I know, very original name ;P )

Shapes, colours and people

Inspired by third years work from the Illustration degree show.
Absolutely love the idea of shapes of colours forming people and fine lines to bring in the details.

Possible style inspiration of animation design?
Reminds me a little bit of the style and colour palette used in 38-39°C by Kangmin Kim.

Light is a beautiful thing

I love the idea of how much light and movement we could see if our eyes could see like a camera on a long exposure setting.
Seeing the river of red and yellow of city traffic with out own eyes.
Or maybe even the spinning lights of the stars as the Earth rotates.

But then again I can also imagine that could result in a massive headache.
One beautiful headache.

Visiting friends and family at Newquay Zoo

Observing different species of birds, animals and insects.
Trying to quickly capture their characteristics and personality is easier said than done.
These are some of the sketches I managed to do while we were exploring the zoo.

Otters - love to cuddle, family bond is obvious, their prey/predator status shows in their movements, quick darting movements and slow controlled movements, playful yet cautious, have they're personal precious items (pebbles)

Penguins - when on two feet constantly falling forwards, legs barely seem to make it under in time, waddles, as if it doesn't take much to tip them over, flippers out to side for balance,
graceful in water, full control, confident movements, fast!

Squirrel monkeys - seem aware how small they are, vulnerable, privately curious, shy, wraps tail around body for convenience and comfort, cocks head from side to side, you can see them observing things, sit bunched up tight
